Horrified by Repulsion was released on July 10th 1989, meaning that it recently celebrated its 37th anniversary! Interestingly though, the album was actually recorded back in 1986, but label troubles delayed its release by several years. By the time it finally came out, many of the bands it had influenced had already released their own landmark records.

Horrifeid is of the Grindcore genre, which i wasnt too familiar with before listening. I know a couple bands from it, which off course included legends Napalm Death and Carcass, a band i personally really like but havent delved into their early grin/goregrind stuff yet. Speaking of goregrind, another thing i knew about Grindcore is its crazy offshoot subgenres like the alredy mentioned goregrind, pornogrind, gorenoise and so on. But what is Grindcore anyways?

Grindcore is a combination of metal and hardcore punk, emerging in the mid 80s, drawing inspiration from abrasive-sounding musical styles, such as thrashcore, crustpunk, hardcore, etc (such lovely sounding genres!). Grindcore is a mostly noisefilled style of hardcore punk while borrowing their downtuned guitars, blast beats, and growling vocals. The result is one of the most aggressive and chaotic genres in heavy music.

While this album failed to get any mainstream attention at first, it was eventually released through Necrosis Record, a short lived record label ran by Jeff Walker and Bill Steer of Carcass who i mentioned earlier. It has since been ranked as some of the best grindcore albums of all time, but its my time to judge

Horrified has 18 tracks, which might seem like a lot for a metal album, but grindcore is known for their very short songs (the shortest song ever is "You suffer" by Napalm Death!) so this double digit song number isnt that ridicilous. The full album is only around 29 minutes, only a minute short of that 30 minute mark

Most of the songs are under 2 minutes long with only "Black Breath" and title/final track being over 2 minutes long. The lyrics are nothing to write home about, simply singing about gore, death, zombies and ocassionally Satan. I think the artwork is also sweet. From the image that you can see on your screen its a decaying zombie head on a vomit green backdrop. It was done by the bassist and vocalist Scott Carlson and its always nice to see band members making their own cover art

The songs are all very fast paced, with the lyrics being shouted fast, so fast you sometimes dont even have the time to catch them! The production is pretty raw, which is to be expected from an album made with only $300! The drums are usually blast beats which are chaotic. The guitar, played by Aaron Freeman and Matt Olivo, is best described as filthy. For many this might sound shit due to its low production value, but i think that adds to the experience. I feel way more sucked in with the quality that is presented while they sing about zombies eating off a little girls face or some shit

My standout tracks were "Black Breath", "The Lurking Fear" and the title track "Horrified". This album isnt something i would put on every day or go straight to in my playlist, but its definetly an enjoyable album which i reccomend for anyone if they wanna give grindcore a listen.
